Friday Night Action

May 4th,

On Friday night, the CCFC hosted three highly competitive quads.  In the top section were three masters Nelson Castaneda, Daniel Lowinger and Ian Harris, as well as the young talent Zachary Tanenbaum.  Tanenbaum was attempting to qualify for the USA World Youth team, but needed to finish with 2.5/3 points in order to qualify.  Tanenbaum defeated Lowinger, but ultimately was unable to score any more points against the much higher rated opposition.  Castaneda won the section, but only by half a point over Harris.

In the second section, CCFC Director Melvin Patrick came into the tournament as the top seed, but had to face some dangerous competition.  Patrick eventually tied for 1st with two points, but the story of the section was Noah Arthurs’ ability to regroup after a first round loss, to defeat Patrick in the final round and tie for 1st!

Finally, in the third section, the still provisionally rated R.J. Arnold won the section with 2.5/3 points, a clear point ahead of the field.  This result was especially impressive since all four players were rated between 1300 – 1400 and he was the least experienced of the four!
